Every autumn, deciduous trees pull off one of nature’s most impressive tricks. They do not actually wait for the cold to start preparing for winter. Instead, they count the hours of daylight. As the days shorten, sensitive proteins inside their leaves act like a biological clock, telling the tree it is time to wrap up photosynthesizing, recycle vital nutrients, and drop its leaves before the hard freezes set in.
The problem? Bright streetlights break the clock.
When high-intensity LEDs and floodlights blast a tree canopy through the night, they trick its internal sensors into thinking it is still the middle of summer. Scientists call this delayed senescence, but in plain English, the tree is simply misled into holding on too long.
While keeping green leaves late in the year might look harmless, it leaves trees totally defenseless against winter:

Frostbite: An early severe freeze will catch the leaf tissues full of water, killing off branches before the tree can pull its essential nutrients back down into the trunk.

Snapped Branches: Leaves trap falling snow like tiny buckets. An early snowfall on a fully-leafed canopy creates massive weight, causing large branches to split and crash.

Confused Wildlife: Delays in leaf drop mess up the thick layer of ground litter that insects, frogs, and small mammals depend on for winter insulation.
Fixing this does not mean leaving cities in the dark. Simple tweaks, like using downward-shielded fixtures, warmer light spectra, and motion timers, let us light the streets for people while letting local trees and wildlife get a decent night rest.
