With over 80% of the world’s population living under light-polluted skies, artificial light at night (ALAN) has become a critical global environmental challenge. In response to this issue, the European Union-funded VET EcoLume project has established a comprehensive professional pathway to train a new generation of light pollution mitigation specialists. Developed through international collaboration across Europe and Latin America, the initiative equips learners with high-demand green and digital skills mapped directly to the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).
At the center of this educational ecosystem are three interconnected learning resources:

1. An Innovative Vocational Curriculum
The 29-hour vocational curriculum provides a structured, multi-dimensional training program. Across five specialized modules, students progress from the fundamental physics of light and diagnostic tools—such as Sky Quality Meters (SQM) and VIIRS satellite data—to evaluating health and ecological impacts, designing Urban Lighting Plans (ULP), and building community governance structures.

2. A Comprehensive Instruction Manual for Educators
Designed specifically for trainers and VET educators, the Eco Lume Instruction Manual offers a practical guide to delivering impactful adult education. Rooted in the principles of andragogy, the manual emphasizes experiential learning, interactive case studies, and field exercises like participatory “lighting walks”. It supports educators with formative evaluation frameworks and inclusive teaching methods to ensure effective knowledge transfer in diverse learning environments.

3. An Interactive eLearning Platform
To ensure digital accessibility and flexibility, the project launched an open online learning platform. Featuring five self-paced modules that take approximately 45 minutes each, the platform combines visual media, interactive diagnostic tools, and end-of-module knowledge checks. This allows busy professionals and students to build expertise flexibly at their own pace.

Leading Environmental Change
By integrating technical diagnostics, sustainable urban design, and strategic advocacy, the VET EcoLume project prepares learners to become true agents of change. Graduates gain industry-relevant competencies for the expanding green economy while helping safeguard dark skies, biodiversity, circadian health, and sustainable nightscapes for future generations.
